One fiber optic cable and six routers

A single fiber optic cable can support multiple routers by terminating the fiber at an ONT and distributing the connection through a high-speed switch to each router.

Basic Setup

1. Optical Network Terminal (ONT): The fiber optic cable from your ISP must first connect to an ONT, which converts the optical signal into an electrical Ethernet signal that routers can use .
2. High-Speed Switch: Connect a fast, multi-port Ethernet switch to the ONT. This switch acts as a central hub, allowing multiple routers to receive the fiber connection simultaneously .

IP Addressing and Routing

• Public IPs: If each router needs direct internet access, you may require multiple public IP addresses from your ISP. Some ISPs provide blocks of IPs, often starting at six addresses, which is sufficient for your setup .
• Private Subnets: Alternatively, you can use private IP addressing with one router acting as the main gateway. The other routers can be connected via point-to-point links or VLANs, with routing configured to allow traffic between networks .
• Point-to-Point Links: For more advanced setups, assign a /30 subnet for each router-to-router link. This ensures efficient routing without IP conflicts and allows each router to communicate with the main gateway .

Considerations

• Switch Performance: Use a switch capable of handling gigabit or multi-gigabit speeds to prevent bottlenecks. Managed switches allow VLAN configuration and better traffic control.
• Router Capabilities: Ensure each router supports the speeds provided by your fiber connection. Wi-Fi 6 or 7 routers are recommended for high-speed fiber plans .
• Network Segmentation: For security and performance, consider segmenting networks using VLANs or separate subnets, especially if the routers serve different apartments or departments.

Advanced Options

• Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM): For very high-capacity setups, a single fiber can carry multiple logical networks using different wavelengths. This is more common in enterprise or ISP environments .
• Mesh or Cascading: If the routers are part of a single network, you can configure them in a mesh or cascading setup to extend coverage while maintaining a single subnet.
