The main line of a distribution box is connected through the main isolator or MCB, then routed through protective devices like RCCBs, with phase, neutral, and PE lines properly distributed to branch circuits.

Main Line Connection Steps

1. Incoming Supply Connection: The phase (live) and neutral lines from the utility or main distribution board are first connected to the main isolating switch or main MCB of the distribution box. In single-phase systems, a double-pole MCB is commonly used as the main switch, while in three-phase systems, three-phase lines (A, B, C) are connected to the main isolator. The neutral line is connected to the neutral terminal, and the protective earth (PE) line is connected to the PE terminal board . 2. Protective Device Integration: From the main switch, the phase lines are routed to RCCBs or RCDs for leakage protection. The neutral line passes through the RCCB to maintain proper protection. The PE line should not pass through the RCCB, as this can cause nuisance tripping . RCCBs protect against electric shock, leakage currents, and insulation faults. 3. Branch Circuit Distribution: After the RCCB, phase lines are connected to branch MCBs for individual circuits. Single-pole MCBs are used for standard loads, while double-pole MCBs may be used for special loads. Neutral lines from the RCCB are connected to the neutral bus bar, and PE lines are connected to the PE bus bar. Each branch circuit draws its phase, neutral, and PE from these bus bars . 4. Wiring Arrangement and Safety:

  • Wiring between the main breaker and branch breakers is typically arranged on the left side of the box, while outgoing wires are on the right .
  • Wires should be neatly bound with plastic ties, maintaining uniform spacing and avoiding kinks .
  • The distribution box body and door must be connected with a braided copper wire for protective grounding .
  • All lines should be clearly marked for voltage, phase, and type (AC/DC) to prevent confusion . 5. Inspection and Testing: After wiring, a safety inspection should be conducted to check for short circuits, overloads, and proper grounding. Only after verification should the distribution box be energized .
