If a standard protective box is unavailable, fiber splices can still be safeguarded using splice sleeves, careful coiling, and temporary enclosures to prevent damage and environmental exposure.

Use Splice Sleeves

A fiber optic splice sleeve is a small protective tube designed to encase a fusion splice, providing mechanical strength and environmental protection . It typically consists of an outer heat-shrink tube, an inner adhesive layer, and a stainless steel or ceramic strength member. After fusion splicing, the sleeve is heated to shrink around the splice, securing it and preventing microbends or breaks . This is a critical first step to protect the fragile splice even without a full enclosure.

Organize with Splice Trays

Even without a box, fiber splice trays can help manage and protect splices . Place the splices in a tray to maintain proper bend radius, prevent tangling, and allow organized routing. Trays can be temporarily mounted on a wall, inside a cabinet, or even secured in a weather-resistant container to reduce stress on the fibers .

Temporary or Improvised Enclosures
