Methods for Disassembling Low-Voltage Network Cabinets

Disassembly of a low-voltage network cabinet requires complete power isolation, careful handling of modular components, and adherence to safety protocols to prevent electrical hazards and equipment damage.

Preparation and Safety Measures

Before disassembly, ensure the cabinet is fully de-energized and locked out according to standard electrical safety procedures . Wear approved personal protective equipment (PPE), including insulated gloves, safety glasses, and protective clothing. Verify the working environment for adequate lighting, ventilation, and absence of moisture or conductive debris . Follow any Operational Instructions (OI) specific to the cabinet model .

Understanding Cabinet Structure

Low-voltage cabinets, such as GCS, MNS, or energy storage cabinets, are typically divided into three compartments:

  • Horizontal busbar compartment for main current distribution
  • Functional unit or drawer compartment for circuit breakers and modular units
  • Cable compartment for incoming and outgoing connections Drawers often have five handle positions: Connected, Test, Disconnected, Withdrawn, and Isolated. Mechanical interlocks prevent movement under load, ensuring safety during disassembly .

Disassembly Procedure

  1. Power Down and Verify Isolation: Confirm all incoming and outgoing circuits are de-energized. Use voltage testers to ensure no residual voltage is present .
  2. Remove Modular Drawers: Operate the drawer handle to the Withdrawn or Isolated position. Avoid forcing the drawer if the circuit breaker is closed .
  3. Disconnect Busbar Connections: Loosen bolts using a torque wrench if necessary. Inspect for wear or overheating signs before removal .
  4. Handle Contacts Carefully: Primary “plum blossom” contacts transmit main current; secondary contacts handle control signals. Avoid bending pins or applying excessive grease, which can cause wear or monitoring errors .
  5. Remove Cables and Terminations: Label and disconnect all incoming and outgoing cables, including transformer isolators and distribution feeders. Replace any corroded or damaged terminals .
  6. Clean and Inspect Components: Wipe down compartments, check for oxidation, and replace any damaged or overheated parts .

Special Considerations for Energy Storage Cabinets

For low-voltage energy storage cabinets, such as those housing Li-Ion modules, follow manufacturer-specific instructions for battery disconnection, voltage verification, and safe handling. Ensure that charge and discharge circuits are fully isolated before removing modules .

Post-Disassembly

Store all components in a dry, ventilated area and maintain proper documentation of removed parts. Inspect mechanical interlocks, springs, and contacts before reassembly to ensure operational safety . By following these steps, you can safely disassemble a low-voltage network cabinet while minimizing the risk of electrical hazards and equipment damage.
