  • No visible light indicates a break, severe bend, or blocked connector, while intermittent light may suggest a partial break or microbending . Never look directly into an active fiber carrying infrared signals, as it can damage your eyes.

Step 3: Measure Optical Power

Use an optical power meter and light source to test signal strength:

  • Disconnect active equipment and connect the light source to one end and the power meter to the other.
  • Compare the measured power to the expected reference level.
  • Significant loss or zero reading indicates a broken fiber or poor connection, whereas normal readings with no active equipment suggest the link is simply unpowered .

Step 4: Advanced Testing (Optional)

For precise fault location, use an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR):

  • OTDR can detect exact break points, microbends, or high-loss sections along the fiber.
  • This is especially useful for long or critical links where visual inspection and power measurements are inconclusive .

Step 5: Equipment and Power Check

  • Ensure the connected devices (switch, ONT, media converter) are powered on.
  • Check for link lights or LOS (Loss of Signal) indicators on the equipment.
  • If the patch cord is intact but the equipment is off, the fiber will show no signal even though it is not broken .
