Tungsten Ore Spectrometer

Tungsten ore can be analyzed using both laboratory and field spectrometers, including XRF, GDMS, and UV-Vis-NIR instruments, for rapid and precise elemental and mineral identification.

Laboratory Spectrometers

Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry (GDMS) is widely used in laboratories for high-precision analysis of tungsten ores. GDMS can quantify virtually all elements from lithium to uranium, detecting impurities at sub part-per-billion levels. It is particularly effective for determining trace uranium and thorium concentrations in tungsten ores and sludge, often combined with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and microwave digestion to enhance accuracy. Laboratories using GDMS are typically accredited under ISO/IEC 17025, ensuring reliable chemical and mechanical testing standards (Global Tungsten & Powders) . Spectrographic analysis is another laboratory method, ideal for estimating impurities in tungsten metal. Samples are excited in a direct current arc with a stabilizer like germanium, which minimizes tungsten volatilization and efficiently transfers impurities into the excitation zone. This method can detect 29 elements with limits ranging from 0.3 ppm to 100 ppm, making it suitable for evaluating high-purity tungsten (911Metallurgist) .

Field and Portable Spectrometers

Portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers allow on-site, non-destructive elemental analysis of tungsten ores. Devices like the TITAN or Compass200 provide rapid identification of tungsten, molybdenum, tin, and other metals directly in the field. They are rugged, battery-powered, and capable of operating in extreme mining conditions, delivering near-instant results for geochemical mapping, sample screening, and vectoring toward ore deposits (Bruker; Gonoava) . UV-Vis-NIR field spectrometers are used for rapid mineral identification and alteration mapping. Instruments such as the oreXpress™, oreXplorer™, and oreXpert™ can detect spectral features of primary tungsten minerals like wolframite and scheelite, as well as secondary minerals formed through hydrothermal or supergene processes. These spectrometers allow geologists to identify mineral phases, create alteration maps, and accelerate core logging in the field (Spectral Evolution) .

Practical Considerations

  • Sample preparation: Laboratory methods often require finely ground samples (200–300 mesh) for accurate results, while field spectrometers can analyze coarser material.
  • Detection limits: GDMS and spectrographic methods provide extremely low detection limits for trace impurities, whereas portable XRF and NIR spectrometers are optimized for rapid, semi-quantitative field analysis.
  • Applications: Laboratory spectrometers are ideal for high-purity tungsten evaluation and regulatory compliance, while portable instruments support exploration, mineral mapping, and real-time decision-making in mining operations. In summary, the choice of tungsten ore spectrometer depends on the required precision, location of analysis, and type of information needed. Laboratory GDMS and spectrographic methods offer high sensitivity for trace elements, while portable XRF and NIR spectrometers provide rapid, on-site mineral identification and exploration support.
