Visual Inspection

Visual inspection is the first step in testing fiber optic cables. Technicians use fiber inspection scopes to examine connector endfaces for dirt, scratches, chips, or other damage that can cause signal loss. The IEC 61300-3-35 standard defines pass/fail criteria for the core and cladding zones of connectors. Cleaning and re-inspection are performed if contamination or damage is detected, as over 80% of field failures are due to dirty or damaged connectors .

Optical Loss Testing

Optical Loss Test Sets (OLTS) measure the total light loss in a fiber link, including connectors, splices, and the fiber itself. This method simulates network conditions and verifies that the cable meets performance specifications. A calibrated light source is connected to one end of the fiber, and a power meter measures the output at the other end. Launch and receive reference cables are used to set a 0 dB reference for accurate measurements .

Fault Detection

Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs) send pulses of light down the fiber and analyze reflected signals to detect faults, bends, splices, and breaks. OTDRs provide a detailed map of the fiber route, including the location and severity of losses, making them essential for troubleshooting and route verification .

Visual Fault Locators (VFLs) use visible red laser light to quickly identify breaks, tight bends, or severe stress points in the fiber. While VFLs do not measure signal loss, they are effective for locating physical faults in the cable .

  • Fusion Splicers are used when rerouting or repairing fibers, ensuring minimal loss at splice points.
