Principle of Distance Protection in Relay Protection

A distance protection relay operates by measuring the apparent impedance between the relay location and a fault point, tripping the circuit when this impedance falls below a preset threshold.

Working Principle

A distance relay, also called an impedance relay, functions by continuously measuring the voltage and current at the relay location. The relay calculates the apparent impedance Zapp=V/I , which represents the electrical distance to a fault along the transmission line . Under normal conditions, the voltage-to-current ratio remains constant, keeping the relay inactive. When a fault occurs, the voltage drops and current rises, reducing the apparent impedance. If this impedance falls below a predetermined value, the relay activates and trips the circuit breaker .

Fault Detection Mechanism

The relay uses current and voltage elements: the current element produces a torque proportional to the current, while the voltage element produces an opposing torque proportional to the voltage . During a fault, the increased current and decreased voltage shift the torque balance, causing the relay to operate. The distance to the fault is inferred from the measured impedance, as line impedance is proportional to its length .

Relay Zones and Characteristics

Distance relays are often set in zones to provide selective protection:

  • Zone 1: Typically 80% of the line impedance, providing fast tripping for faults within the primary line section.
  • Zone 2: Around 120% of the line impedance, covering the line and slightly beyond for backup protection.
  • Zone 3: May cover adjacent lines or act as a backup for remote faults . Relay characteristics can be Mho, Quadrilateral, or Offset Mho, plotted on an R–X diagram to define the operating region. The relay trips only if the measured impedance falls within this region and directional criteria are satisfied .

Advantages

Distance relays offer speed, accuracy, and selectivity compared to overcurrent relays. They are particularly effective for high-voltage transmission lines, detecting faults quickly and isolating only the affected section, thus maintaining system stability . In summary, the principle of a distance protection relay is based on measuring the voltage-to-current ratio to determine the apparent impedance, comparing it with preset thresholds, and tripping the circuit breaker when a fault is detected within the protected zone. This ensures fast, reliable, and selective protection of transmission lines.
