Distribution Board

It is designed to manage high electrical loads and protect circuits from overloads or short circuits using circuit breakers, fuses, and sometimes residual-current devices (RCDs) . Distribution boards are commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial settings, and they can be classified as:

  • Main Distribution Boards (MDBs): Receive power directly from the utility or generator and distribute it to the entire building.
  • Sub-Distribution Boards (SDBs): Take power from the main board and supply specific zones, floors, or equipment, helping balance electrical loads . Distribution boards are typically permanently installed on walls and serve as the primary hub for electrical distribution, ensuring safety and efficient power management .

Distribution Box

A distribution box (also called a DB box, consumer unit, or sub-distribution box) is a smaller or portable enclosure that receives power from a main source and distributes it to a limited number of circuits . Its main purpose is to organize and protect electrical connections rather than manage large-scale power distribution. Key features include:

  • Circuit breakers and fuses for overcurrent protection.
  • Surge protection devices (SPDs) to guard against voltage spikes.
  • Residual current devices (RCDs/RCCBs) for safety against electric shocks.
  • Main switch to control power during maintenance or emergencies.
  • Bus bars and internal wiring to efficiently route electricity to circuits . Distribution boxes are often used in specific areas like kitchens, garages, workshops, or outdoor lighting setups, and are common in temporary or modular installations such as construction sites or events . Unlike distribution boards, they are not designed to handle the full electrical load of an entire building.
