How to install an integrated fiber optic splice tray

Installing a fiber optic splice tray involves careful preparation, fiber stripping, cleaning, cleaving, splicing, and organized placement within the tray to ensure low-loss, protected connections.

Preparation and Safety

Before starting, gather essential tools: fiber optic strippers, cleavers, fusion or mechanical splicers, heat shrink sleeves, lint-free wipes, isopropyl alcohol, and safety glasses . Ensure the work area is well-lit and free of dust. Always avoid looking directly into fiber ends, as laser light can cause serious eye damage . Wearing ANSI Z87-compliant safety glasses is recommended to protect against fiber shards .

Step 1: Cable and Fiber Preparation

  1. Remove the outer jacket of the fiber optic cable using a fiber stripper, leaving enough inner fibers intact .
  2. Cut and remove buffer tubes carefully to access individual fibers, avoiding microbends or breakage .
  3. Clean the fibers with lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol to remove dust and contaminants .

Step 2: Fiber Cleaving

Use a precision fiber cleaver to create a smooth, perpendicular end face on each fiber. A clean cleave is critical for low-loss splicing .

Step 3: Splicing

  • Fusion splicing: Align fibers in a fusion splicer and weld them together for a permanent, low-loss connection .
  • Mechanical splicing: Align fibers using a mechanical splice connector, which is faster and does not require electricity . After splicing, protect the joint with a splice protection sleeve to shield it from environmental stress .

Step 4: Organizing Fibers in the Tray

  1. Place the spliced fibers into the dedicated slots or compartments of the splice tray .
  2. Maintain proper bend radius to prevent signal loss or fiber damage .
  3. Use tray blanking plates or labeling materials to secure fibers and ensure organized routing .

Step 5: Verification and Testing

After installation, test the spliced fibers using an OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) or power meter to verify signal integrity and low insertion loss .

Step 6: Final Installation

Secure the splice tray inside the fiber enclosure according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring all cables are strain-relieved and neatly routed . Regular inspections can help maintain performance and detect potential issues early. By following these steps, you can achieve a professional, organized, and reliable fiber optic splice tray installation that protects fibers and ensures optimal network performance .
