How to lay optical cables in long-distance pipelines

Optical fiber cables for long-distance pipelines are typically installed in the pipeline right-of-way, using armored or all-dielectric cables, with careful trenching, protection, and supervision to ensure reliable communication and sensing.

Cable Selection and Standards

For long-haul pipeline applications, outdoor-rated optical cables are preferred, often armored with steel tape or dual polymer jackets to protect against mechanical damage, rodents, and environmental stress . ANSI/ICEA S-87-640 and S-104-696 standards define performance requirements for outdoor and indoor-outdoor cables, ensuring durability and sensitivity for distributed sensing applications . Single-mode fibers compliant with ITU-T G.652, G.654, or G.657 are recommended for long distances, with ultra-low loss fibers preferred when large optical budgets are required .

Installation Methods

The most common method for new pipeline construction is installing fiber in the same trench as the pipeline, typically 12–18 inches to the side of the pipe at the same burial depth . Cables can also be installed in conduits or attached to pipeline structures depending on terrain and environmental conditions. Direct burial requires careful trenching, backfilling, and compaction to prevent cable damage.

Protection and Handling

  • Mechanical protection: Steel tape armor or dual jackets prevent crushing and rodent damage .
  • Bend radius: Cables must not be bent below the minimum specified radius, and twisting or excessive tension should be avoided .
  • Lubrication: Special non-abrasive cable lubricants may be used during installation to reduce friction.
  • Cable reserves: Extra cable should be left in loops or “figure-eight” shapes at manholes or junction points to allow for future maintenance .

Splicing and Connections

Splicing should be performed with splice protectors, leaving sufficient fiber reserves. Connections to distributors or equipment should use pigtails or direct connector mounting, ensuring minimal signal loss . Proper labeling and documentation of splice locations are essential for maintenance.

Supervision and Safety

Installation should be supervised at all stages, including trench preparation, cable handling, and splicing. Work areas must be clearly signaled, and environmental measures should be followed to comply with local regulations . Personnel should be trained in fiber handling and safety procedures.

Applications and Benefits

Fiber along pipelines supports SCADA communication, leak detection, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), distributed temperature sensing (DTS), video surveillance, and voice/data services . Excess fiber capacity can also be leased as dark fiber to telecom operators, providing additional revenue streams. By following these standards and best practices, pipeline operators can ensure reliable, long-term performance of optical fiber systems along extensive pipeline networks.
