Understanding Box Plots

A box plot, also called a box and whisker plot, visually represents the distribution of a dataset using five key values: the minimum, first quartile (Q1), median (Q2), third quartile (Q3), and maximum. The box spans the interquartile range (IQR), which contains the middle 50% of the data, while whiskers extend to capture the remaining data within a defined range. Points outside the whiskers are considered outliers and are plotted individually .

Indicating Distribution Shape

While box plots do not show every data point, they provide clues about the shape of the distribution:

• Symmetry: If the median line is centered in the box and whiskers are roughly equal in length, the distribution is likely symmetric .
• Skewness: A longer whisker on one side or a median closer to one end of the box indicates skew. For example, a longer upper whisker suggests right skew, while a longer lower whisker suggests left skew .
• Spread: The size of the box (IQR) and whiskers shows the variability of the data. A taller box indicates greater spread in the middle 50% of values .
• Outliers: Individual points beyond the whiskers highlight extreme values, which can affect the perceived shape of the distribution .

Limitations

Box plots provide a high-level summary but do not reveal detailed features such as modality (number of peaks) or the exact distribution curve. For example, a unimodal, bimodal, or multimodal distribution may produce similar box plots, making it difficult to distinguish these shapes without a histogram or density plot .

Practical Use

Box plots are particularly useful for:

• Comparing distributions across multiple groups.
• Quickly assessing central tendency, spread, and skew.
• Identifying outliers in a dataset. For a more detailed view of the distribution's shape, including peaks and modality, it is recommended to use histograms or dot plots alongside box plots .
