Wheel-shaped drop cable placement

Wheel-shaped drop cables should be deployed carefully from the wheel, with slack managed on the wheel, ensuring proper coil diameter and secure placement to prevent damage and maintain fiber integrity.

Deployment and Placement

Wheel-shaped drop cables, such as the FieldShield StrongFiber Drop Wheel, come pre-spooled with 200 feet (60.96 m) of fiber and pre-terminated connectors. To deploy, extend the wheel from its cradle and pull the fiber through the microduct or conduit until the connector reaches its destination. Any remaining slack should be stored on the wheel to prevent tangling or fiber stress, maintaining a plug-and-play setup for direct connection to ONTs or adapters (Clearfield) .

Coil Management

When creating coils or loops from drop cables, maintain a minimum loop diameter of 8 inches to avoid fiber damage. Secure the coil with at least four cable ties spaced 90 degrees apart to prevent unraveling. For aerial installations, coupling coils should be placed at both ends of the cable between the clamp and the splice closure or termination box to accommodate environmental factors like wind-induced vibration (galloping) .

Aerial and Indoor Considerations

For aerial installations, ensure the cable is supported with all-metallic clamps with a minimum tensile strength of 550 lbs. Avoid plastic shims, which may not adequately secure the cable. Pre-plan the route, including splice points and slack storage, and ensure proper permits and pole readiness. For indoor or microduct installations, the wheel allows controlled deployment, reducing the risk of kinks or excessive bending .

Best Practices

  • Always handle fiber carefully to avoid sharp bends or tension beyond specifications.
  • Use built-in cleaning dust caps for connectors to reduce installation errors.
  • Store any excess fiber on the wheel or in designated slack storage areas to maintain network reliability.
  • For flat or bow-tie drop cables, follow the recommended twist and coil procedures to minimize vibration and stress during aerial deployment . Proper wheel-shaped drop cable placement ensures efficient, safe, and reliable fiber deployment, whether for aerial, indoor, or microduct applications.
