To use an optical power meter correctly, clean all connectors, set the correct wavelength, reference the source if needed, connect the fiber under test, and read the power in dBm or dB.

Preparation and Setup

  1. Clean the connectors and meter port: Use lint-free wipes, fiber cleaning solutions, or click-to-clean tools to remove dust, oil, or debris from both the meter and fiber connectors. Dirty connectors are a major source of inaccurate readings and can block light from reaching the photodiode sensor .
  2. Power on and stabilize the meter: Turn on the optical power meter and allow it to warm up for a minute or two. Some meters may require zeroing or calibration according to the manufacturer's instructions .
  3. Select the correct wavelength: Set the meter to match the wavelength of the light source (commonly 850 nm, 1310 nm, or 1550 nm). Wavelength mismatch can lead to incorrect readings because the photodiode's sensitivity varies with wavelength .

  1. Reference the source (for insertion loss measurements): If measuring insertion loss, connect a reference patch cord to the light source and set the meter to zero or reference mode. This ensures that subsequent measurements reflect only the fiber link's loss .
  2. Connect the fiber under test: Gently attach the fiber to the meter's input port. Ensure the connection is snug but avoid excessive force to prevent damage to delicate fiber connectors .
  3. Read the optical power: The meter will display the power in dBm (absolute power relative to 1 mW) or dB (relative loss or gain). Use dBm to verify transmitter or receiver power levels and dB to measure signal loss across fiber, connectors, or splices .
