Cameroon Bridge Construction Base

Cameroon is actively investing in bridge construction and rehabilitation, with major projects underway and international partnerships supporting infrastructure development.

Government Investment and Rehabilitation Efforts

Cameroon has allocated CFA16.5 billion ($27 million) in 2025 to rebuild 194 bridges and culverts damaged by floods in 2024, covering a total of 2,148 linear meters. Key reconstruction sites include Sanaga-Maritime in the Littoral region, Munam in Mbengwi (Northwest), and Yagoua in the Far North, which are critical for local mobility and trade. Out of 2,645 bridges nationwide, 488 are non-functional or structurally compromised, highlighting the need for ongoing rehabilitation and resilience improvements in infrastructure planning .

Major Ongoing Projects

One of the most significant projects is the Dja bridge in southern Cameroon, managed by China Harbour Engineering Company Cameroun. As of June 2026, the bridge supports are nearly complete, with all 20 foundational piles finished. The project includes a 90-meter bridge and 3 kilometers of access roads, featuring a dual-lane carriageway 7 meters wide with 1.5-meter shoulders, drainage culverts, and protective dykes along the riverbanks. The total investment for this project is approximately 10.53 billion FCFA, and it will enhance connectivity along the Assok–Ngombo axis in the Dja-et-Lobo department .

International Partnerships

Spain has committed to investing in bridge construction in Cameroon through the company Centunion, backed by a 60 million euro (≈39 billion FCFA) loan from the Spanish government. Projects include bridges over the Mayo-Deo at Kontcha, Mayo Thiel at Bashéo, and the Nyong River at Ekombitié and Malombo, as well as a bridge over the Noun River at Sankié village. These projects aim to strengthen regional connectivity and support economic development across multiple regions .

Local Construction Expertise

Cameroon also has domestic construction companies like Global Bridge Group, which provide residential and commercial construction, project management, and equipment leasing services. They operate nationwide, including Douala and Yaoundé, and are expanding their capacity to handle larger infrastructure projects, combining local expertise with international standards .

Strategic Importance

Bridge construction in Cameroon is critical for improving mobility, trade, and resilience against climate-related disruptions. Projects like the Dja bridge and Spanish-backed initiatives not only restore damaged infrastructure but also enhance regional connectivity, support economic growth, and reduce the risk of accidents caused by structural failures . Overall, Cameroon's bridge construction base is a combination of government-led rehabilitation, international investment, and local construction expertise, reflecting a strategic approach to modernizing the country's transport infrastructure.
