Core Function

Digital optical modules, also known as optical transceivers, operate at the physical layer of the OSI model and serve as the interface between electronic devices and fiber optic cables. Their primary function is photoelectric conversion: converting electrical signals from networking equipment into optical signals for transmission, and converting received optical signals back into electrical signals for processing .

Key Components

  1. Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA): Converts electrical signals into modulated light using a laser diode (LD) or LED. The TOSA includes a light source, optical interface, monitoring photodiode, and driver circuitry. It may also feature an automatic optical power control (APC) to maintain consistent output power .
  2. Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA): Converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals using a photodetector (PIN diode or avalanche photodiode) and amplifiers such as Trans-impedance Amplifier (TIA) and post-amplifiers. This ensures the signal is strong and digitized for further processing .
  3. Functional Circuits and Interfaces: Include signal conditioning, amplification, and electrical/optical interfaces to ensure accurate transmission and reception over varying distances .

  • Modulation and Demodulation: The module modulates electrical data onto light for transmission and demodulates received light to recover the original data .
  • Amplification and Conditioning: Strengthens transmitted signals to cover longer distances and improves received signals for accurate data extraction .
  • Frequency Conversion: Some modules can convert signals to different frequencies to match network requirements .
