  • Alignment Tolerances: SMF requires sub-micron lateral alignment and minimal angular deviation, while MMF tolerances are more forgiving due to the larger core .
  • Endface Preparation: Fiber ends must be clean and properly cleaved, often perpendicular to the fiber axis, to ensure efficient coupling and reduce back-reflection .
  • Mode Matching: When coupling SMF to MMF, mode-field adapters or tapered fibers can improve efficiency by gradually matching the mode sizes .
