Pig tail fiber processing process

The production of fiber optic pigtails involves precise material selection, cutting, stripping, connector attachment, curing, polishing, and rigorous quality inspection to ensure high-performance optical connections.

Overview of Fiber Optic Pigtails

A fiber optic pigtail is a short optical fiber with a factory-installed connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other, designed for splicing to other fibers in the field. Unlike patch cords, which have connectors on both ends, pigtails are typically unjacketed and used in splice trays, optical distribution frames, or terminal boxes . They are available in single-mode (yellow, 9/125 µm) and multimode (orange or aqua, 50/125 µm or 62.5/125 µm) fibers, with various connector types such as LC, SC, ST, FC, MT-RJ, and E2000 .

Production Steps

  1. Material Selection High-quality optical fibers and connectors are chosen to minimize signal loss and ensure durability. Fibers are inspected for defects before assembly .
  2. Cutting Fiber cables, usually supplied on reels, are cut to the required lengths using automated cutting machines for precision and efficiency .
  3. Stripping The outer jacket is removed using a jacket stripper, and the tight-buffered inner cladding is stripped with a fiber miller stripper to expose the core .
  4. Connector Attachment Epoxy glue (commonly 353 epoxy) is applied to the fiber, which is then inserted into the ferrule of the connector. This can be done manually or with automated machines .
  5. Curing The fiber in the connector is solidified using a vertical or horizontal solidification furnace to ensure a stable bond .
  6. Cleaning and Polishing Half-finished pigtails are cleaned with an ultrasonic cleaning machine. The connector interface is polished to align the fiber precisely with the ferrule, ensuring minimal insertion loss .
  7. Inspection Microscopes (400x–600x) are used to inspect the connector interface for cleanliness and alignment. Pigtails are tested for insertion loss, return loss, and durability .
  8. Quality Control Throughout the process, pigtails are monitored to meet industry standards such as IEC and TIA, ensuring compatibility and reliable performance .

Additional Considerations

  • Splicing: The bare end of the pigtail is typically fusion or mechanically spliced to a fiber optic cable in the field .
  • Automation: Advanced machinery improves consistency, reduces labor, and enhances production efficiency .
  • Applications: Pigtails are essential for fast, reliable terminations in optical distribution frames, terminal boxes, and splice closures . This structured production process ensures that fiber optic pigtails provide high-quality, low-loss connections critical for modern telecommunications networks.
