• Layer 2 vs Layer 3: On a pure Layer 2 switch, the gateway is only used for management traffic. On a Layer 3 switch, the switch can act as the gateway for connected devices, simplifying routing and reducing dependency on the aggregation router .
• Unique assignment: Each network should have a unique gateway to avoid conflicts .
• Static vs dynamic: The gateway is usually statically assigned to ensure consistent management access .

Example Scenario

In a network with multiple VLANs, an access switch can have VLAN interfaces configured with IP addresses acting as gateways for PCs in each VLAN.
