MPO Jumper Requirements

MPO jumpers require careful selection of fiber count, connector type, polarity, return loss, and cable jacket to ensure high-density, high-speed, and safe network performance.

Fiber Count

MPO jumpers come in various fiber counts, commonly 8, 12, 16, and 24 fibers.

  • 8-core jumpers are ideal for 8-fiber transceivers used in 40G and 100G deployments, providing full fiber utilization without conversion equipment .
  • 12-core jumpers are suited for large-scale 12-core MTP deployments but may leave fibers unused if connecting to 8-fiber ports .
  • 24-core jumpers are typically used in 100GBASE-SR10 links and provide a seamless upgrade path for 10G, 40G, and 100G networks .

Connector Type and Return Loss

MPO connectors can have APC (Angled Physical Contact) or UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) end faces.

  • APC connectors generally require a return loss ≥ 50 dB, while UPC connectors require ≥ 50 dB for the MPO end and ≥ 60 dB for the branch-end connector . High return loss is critical in high-speed data centers to minimize signal reflection, distortion, and performance degradation .

Polarity

Polarity defines the fiber core arrangement at both ends of the jumper. Correct polarity ensures proper signal transmission between devices and is essential for maintaining network integrity .

Cable Jacket and Fire Safety

MPO jumper jackets are available in PVC, LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen), and other flame-retardant materials.

  • LSZH is preferred in enclosed spaces because it emits minimal toxic gases during fire, meeting strict fire-safety regulations .

Application Scenarios

MPO jumpers are primarily used for short-range, high-density connections within racks or between adjacent racks, connecting devices, patch panels, or cassettes . Typical lengths range from 1 to 30 meters. They support 10G, 40G, 100G, 400G, and even 800G networks, depending on fiber type (single-mode OS2 or multimode OM3/OM4/OM5) and network architecture .

Additional Considerations

  • Compatibility with transceivers: Ensure the jumper matches QSFP+, QSFP28, CFP, CXP, QSFP-DD, or OSFP modules .
  • Insertion loss: Low insertion loss (≤0.35 dB) is preferred for high-speed applications .
  • Customization: Fiber count, connector gender, polarity, and length should be selected based on network design and performance requirements . By considering these parameters—fiber count, connector type, polarity, return loss, cable jacket, and application requirements—MPO jumpers can provide reliable, high-density connectivity for modern data centers and high-speed networks.
