Active Connection (Connector-Based)

Active connections use fiber optic connectors to join fibers without permanent fusion. This method is flexible, convenient, and widely used in building networks and data centers. Typical attenuation is around 1 dB per connection, and connectors allow easy reconfiguration of networks. Common connector types include SC, LC, ST, and FC, each with specific coupling mechanisms and applications. SC connectors are square and push-pull, LC connectors are compact for high-density setups, ST connectors use bayonet-style locks, and FC connectors are threaded for high-vibration environments .

Cold Splicing (Emergency or Mechanical Splicing)

Cold splicing, also called mechanical splicing, joins fibers using sleeves, clamps, or adhesives without melting the fiber. It is quick and suitable for temporary or emergency repairs, with typical attenuation of 0.1–0.3 dB per point. While easy to perform, the connection may degrade over time, making it less ideal for permanent installations .

Fusion Splicing (Permanent Connection)

Fusion splicing is the most reliable method for permanent fiber connections. It uses an electric arc to melt and fuse fiber ends, producing a connection nearly as strong as a single fiber. Attenuation is minimal, typically 0.01–0.03 dB per point, making it ideal for long-distance or high-performance networks. Fusion splicing requires specialized equipment (fusion splicer) and professional handling, with protective enclosures for the splice points .

Physical Connection (Non-Splicing)

Physical connection methods use V-groove designs and matching liquids to align fibers without splicing. This approach achieves high connection success rates and is suitable for FTTR (Fiber to the Room) solutions. It provides a semi-permanent connection with minimal light loss and is easier to deploy in certain indoor applications .

  • Single-mode vs. Multi-mode: Single-mode fibers are preferred for long-distance communication, while multi-mode fibers are used for shorter distances with higher data rates .
  • Cable Handling: Proper bend radius, pulling tension, and environmental protection are critical to prevent signal loss or fiber damage .
  • Testing: After connection, tools like OTDRs and visual fault locators ensure signal integrity and performance .
  • Connector Selection: Choose connectors based on network density, mechanical stability, and return loss requirements . By understanding these methods and selecting the appropriate connection type and connector, fiber optic networks can achieve high reliability, low attenuation, and long-term performance.
