How Fires Start in Cable Trays

The insulation on cables, especially PVC, can burn at high temperatures (800–1000°C), releasing toxic smoke and accelerating fire spread . Even a single arc flash in a tray can trigger a full-building evacuation due to rapid ignition .

Fire Spread Mechanisms

Cable trays, particularly vertical trays, act like chimneys, allowing fire to climb floors quickly. Close-packed cables in vertical shafts can transmit heat and flames to adjacent cables, creating a chain reaction . Horizontal trays can also propagate fire along their length if the insulation softens and heat transfers between cables . Poorly fitted trays may exacerbate the risk by acting as a fuse or chimney during a fire .

Detection and Protection

Early detection and suppression are critical. Direct Low Pressure (DLP) clean agent systems can suppress fires directly inside the tray by releasing a fire-extinguishing agent at the ignition point, preventing spread without relying on electrical power . Regular inspections, thermal cameras, and fire-retardant coatings on cables further reduce risk .
