Fiber Bragg Grating Measurement

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors measure strain, temperature, and other physical parameters by reflecting specific wavelengths of light that shift in response to environmental changes.

Principles of Operation

FBG sensors are based on a periodic variation of the refractive index along the core of an optical fiber, forming a grating that reflects a specific wavelength of light, known as the Bragg wavelength, while transmitting all other wavelengths . When the fiber experiences strain or temperature changes, the spacing of the grating alters, causing a shift in the reflected wavelength. This shift is detected by an optical interrogator, which converts it into quantitative measurements of strain, temperature, or other parameters .

Measurement Mechanism

  • Strain Measurement: As the fiber stretches or compresses, the distance between grating points changes, shifting the Bragg wavelength proportionally. The sensor's gauge factor defines the sensitivity of this wavelength shift to strain .
  • Temperature Measurement: Temperature changes affect both the fiber's refractive index and grating period, producing a wavelength shift. Temperature compensation techniques, such as using dual FBGs, can isolate strain from thermal effects .
  • Multiplexing: Multiple FBGs can be inscribed along a single fiber, allowing distributed sensing at multiple points with a single optical line, which is particularly useful for structural health monitoring .

Advantages

  • High Sensitivity: Capable of detecting micro-strains and small temperature variations.
  • Immunity to Electromagnetic Interference: Ideal for high-voltage or high-frequency environments .
  • Compact and Lightweight: Suitable for aerospace, robotics, and industrial applications.
  • Durability: Resistant to harsh environments, including extreme temperatures, moisture, and corrosive conditions .
  • Remote Sensing: Optical fibers allow measurements over long distances without signal degradation.

Applications

FBG sensors are widely used in:

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM): Bridges, dams, and buildings to monitor stress and deformation .
  • Aerospace and Transportation: Strain and vibration monitoring in aircraft, wind turbines, and rail systems .
  • Industrial Environments: Measurement in explosive or corrosive atmospheres where electrical sensors are unsafe .
  • Environmental and Biochemical Monitoring: Detecting temperature, pressure, or chemical changes in sensitive settings .

Limitations

  • Temperature-Strain Cross-Sensitivity: Requires compensation techniques to separate strain and temperature effects.
  • Cost of Interrogation Systems: High-precision optical interrogators can be expensive.
  • Installation Complexity: Proper bonding and alignment are critical for accurate measurements . FBG measurement technology continues to evolve, with ongoing research focused on improving sensor durability, multiplexing capacity, and cost-effectiveness, making it a versatile and reliable solution for precise optical sensing in diverse applications .
