Method for measuring rotational speed using fiber optic sensors

Fiber optic sensors provide precise, non-contact measurement of rotational speed using light-based detection methods.

Working Principle

Fiber optic rotational speed sensors operate by detecting changes in light caused by the motion of a rotating object. Typically, a light source is coupled to an optical fiber, which directs light toward a reflective or marked surface on the rotating shaft or wheel. As the object rotates, variations in reflected light or phase shifts in the fiber are captured by a photodetector or light analyzer, which converts these optical signals into electrical pulses. The frequency of these pulses is proportional to the rotational speed, allowing calculation of RPM or angular velocity ( ). Some advanced designs use birefringent optical fibers combined with magnetostrictive materials. In these systems, a toothed wheel rotates within a magnetic field, inducing stress in the fiber. The resulting phase changes in the transmitted light are analyzed to determine the periodic variations caused by the rotating teeth, providing highly accurate speed measurements even under harsh conditions ( ).

Types of Fiber Optic Rotational Sensors

  1. Optical Tachometers: Non-contact sensors that detect reflective markings or surface features on a rotating object. They often include a TTL output and high bandwidth (up to 100 kHz) for fast response ( ).
  2. Rotary Encoders: Fiber optic encoders can measure angular position and rotational speed simultaneously. The light source and detectors are remotely located, connected via fiber optic cables, which allows operation in environments with high vibration or temperature ( ).
  3. Retroreflective Photoelectric Sensors: These sensors use reflective tape on the rotating part and detect light pulses to calculate RPM. Sensitivity can be adjusted for reliability, and averaging over time ensures stable readings ( ).

Advantages

  • Non-contact operation: Eliminates mechanical wear and reduces maintenance.
  • High accuracy: Capable of precise measurements even at high speeds.
  • Remote sensing: Light sources and detectors can be located away from harsh environments.
  • Durability: Resistant to electromagnetic interference, vibrations, and extreme temperatures, making them suitable for aerospace, automotive, and industrial applications ( ).

Applications

  • Aerospace: Monitoring engine shaft speeds during altitude tests.
  • Automotive: Engine performance optimization and quality control.
  • Industrial machinery: Speed monitoring of assembly lines and rotating equipment.
  • Research: High-precision measurements in laboratories and experimental setups ( ). Fiber optic sensors for rotational speed combine precision, reliability, and flexibility, making them ideal for environments where traditional contact-based sensors may fail or be impractical.
