These devices actively change the state of light, either by producing it or converting it into electrical signals. In contrast, passive optical devices do not produce or amplify light. They are used to transmit, distribute, or filter optical signals without external power. Common passive devices include optical fibers, splitters, couplers, filters, and optical attenuators . Optical fibers, for instance, simply guide light from one point to another and do not alter the signal actively, making them a clear example of a device that is not active. Understanding the distinction is crucial in optical communications: active devices provide the source and modulation of light, while passive devices ensure efficient transmission and routing of the optical signal.
