Fiber distribution box fixing on pole

To fix a fiber distribution box on a pole, securely mount it using a pole bracket, manage cable slack, and ensure all fiber connections are clean and properly fastened.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Fiber distribution box and mounting bracket (e.g., YK-SX or FDH-HD compatible)
  • Stainless steel bands and buckles
  • Ratchet-strapping tool or banding tool
  • Nylon ties
  • Hammer and screws/bolts
  • ADSS or mini ADSS fiber optic cable and drop cables
  • Safety harness if working at height
  • Fusion splicer, fiber cleaver, and cleaning kits for fiber connections

Installation Steps

  1. Prepare the Pole and Bracket: Attach the pole mount bracket to the pole using stainless steel bands or bolts, ensuring it is level and secure. Adjustable brackets like YK-SX allow for cable slack storage and fit most termination boxes .
  2. Manage Cable Slack: Coil the fiber optic cable neatly in the storage compartment of the bracket. Use nylon ties to secure the coil, maintaining a minimum bend radius (≥10 times the fiber diameter) to prevent damage .
  3. Mount the Box: Attach the fiber distribution box to the bracket using screws or bolts. For heavier cabinets, use a hoist or crane and ensure at least two people handle the box to avoid injury .
  4. Secure Fiber Connections: Strip the outer sheath of the fiber cable to the appropriate length, fix the cable with clamps or ties, and place splices in the splicing tray. Clean fiber end faces before splicing, aiming for ≤0.08 dB loss per splice .
  5. Seal and Protect: Wrap the splice area with PVC tape, waterproof tape, and an outer protective layer, overlapping each layer by half and pressing firmly. Ensure rubber seals are fully covered to prevent moisture ingress .
  6. Safety Precautions: Always wear a safety harness when working above ground. Attach the harness to the cabinet's safety loops and follow standard pole safety procedures .

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Inspect connectors for looseness or damage; tighten or replace as needed .
  • Use an optical power meter or OTDR to check signal strength and identify high-loss points.
  • Ensure splitters and adapters are within acceptable loss levels.
  • Avoid excessive bending, pulling, or crushing of fibers during installation . By following these steps, the fiber distribution box will be securely mounted, fiber connections will remain reliable, and the installation will comply with safety standards.
