Practical Installation Considerations

When planning cable installation, additional factors must be included:

  • Routing Slack: Extra length to accommodate bends, vertical drops, and alignment changes. Typically 1–3 meters per end for terminations .
  • Splice and Termination Slack: Extra fiber in closures or trays to allow re-entry without stressing fibers .
  • Waste Factor: A percentage added to account for deviations from drawings or unforeseen obstacles .
  • Excess Fiber Length (EFL): Stranded loose tube cables may have 2–3% more fiber than the cable length; central tube designs have minimal EFL .

For a single-mode fiber with 0.5 dB/km attenuation, 2 connectors (0.75 dB each), and 1 splice (0.1 dB), if the total allowable link loss is 5 dB:

  1. Connector Loss = 2 × 0.75 = 1.5 dB
  2. Splice Loss = 1 × 0.1 = 0.1 dB
