A fiber optic pigtail is a short optical fiber with a factory-terminated connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other. The bare end is designed to be spliced to the incoming fiber, while the connector end plugs into equipment or patch panels. Pigtails are preferred over patch cords for permanent terminations because they combine factory precision with field flexibility, ensuring low signal loss and minimal back reflection .

Required Tools for Splicing

To perform professional splicing, the following tools are essential :

  • Fusion Splicer: Uses an electric arc to melt and fuse fiber ends, creating a continuous optical path.
  • Fiber Strippers: Remove the outer buffer and coating without damaging the glass core.
  • High-Precision Cleaver: Cuts the fiber at a perfect 90-degree angle for seamless fusion.
  • Cleaning Supplies: Lint-free wipes and 99% isopropyl alcohol to remove dust and contaminants.

Splicing Methods

1. Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing is the most widely used method, especially for singlemode fibers. The process involves:

  1. Stripping the protective coating from both the pigtail and the incoming fiber.
  2. Cleaning the bare fibers with alcohol and lint-free wipes.
  3. Placing the fibers into a fusion splicer, which aligns the cores precisely.
  4. Applying an electric arc to melt and fuse the fibers together.
  5. Protecting the splice in a splice tray or enclosure. Advantages: Creates a nearly seamless, permanent joint with minimal insertion loss and back reflection. The connection is often stronger than the original fiber .

2. Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing aligns two fiber ends using a precision alignment device and a gel or adhesive to maintain the connection. Steps include:

  1. Stripping and cleaning the fibers.
  2. Inserting the fibers into the mechanical splice holder.
  3. Aligning the cores and securing the fibers with the internal gel or adhesive. Advantages: Quick and simple, requires fewer consumables, and is suitable for temporary or emergency connections. However, it generally has higher insertion loss than fusion splicing and is less durable .
