What is Cold Splicing?

Cold splicing, also called mechanical splicing, is a method of joining two fiber optic cables without using a fusion splicer. Instead of welding the fibers, the ends are aligned inside a precision connector or sleeve, and an index-matching gel fills the microscopic gap to reduce signal loss and back reflection . Typical insertion loss for a properly executed cold splice is around 0.1–0.3 dB, slightly higher than fusion splicing but sufficient for many field and indoor applications .

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol for cleaning fiber ends
  • Fiber cleaver to create a smooth, perpendicular end face

Step-by-Step Cold Splicing Process

  1. Prepare the Fiber: Strip the outer jacket and coating carefully to expose the bare fiber cores. Clean the fibers thoroughly with lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol to remove dust and contaminants .
  2. Cleave the Fiber Ends: Use a high-quality fiber cleaver to produce a smooth, flat, and perpendicular end face. A precise cleave is critical for minimizing insertion loss .
  3. Align the Fibers: Insert the prepared fiber ends into the mechanical splice connector or sleeve. Ensure the fibers are precisely aligned so that light can pass efficiently from one fiber to the other .
  4. Apply Index-Matching Gel: The gel inside the connector fills the microscopic air gap between the fiber tips, reducing reflection and signal loss .
  5. Secure and Protect the Splice: Place the completed splice in a fiber splice tray or enclosure to protect it from physical stress, maintain proper bend radius, and allow for organized cable management .
  6. Test the Connection: Verify the splice quality using an optical power meter or OTDR to ensure low insertion loss and proper signal transmission .
