Distance requirements between the distribution box and the door

A minimum clearance of 0.6–1 meter in front of a distribution box is required, with doors opening outward and unobstructed for safe access and maintenance.

Front Clearance

For safe operation and maintenance, the front of a distribution box or switchboard should have a minimum clearance of 1 meter for commercial or high-capacity installations, while domestic setups can reduce this to 0.6 meters . According to NEC 110.26, the front clearance must be at least 36 inches (≈0.91 meters) for panels facing a non-electrical wall, increasing to 42–48 inches if facing grounded surfaces or other electrical equipment . This ensures that the panel door can open fully (minimum 90°) and allows personnel to work safely.

Side and Height Clearance

Side clearance should be at least 30 inches (≈0.76 meters) or the width of the panel, whichever is greater, to provide safe side access . Height clearance in front of the panel should be at least 78 inches (≈2 meters) to allow standing and safe operation, with the highest breaker handle no more than 79 inches (≈2 meters) above the floor .

Door Access and Safety

Doors to switchboard rooms or enclosures should open outward without requiring a key or tool from the inside, ensuring quick evacuation in emergencies . For larger switchboards (over 800 A per phase or longer than 3 meters), multiple exit paths are recommended unless a clear space of 3 meters is provided in front . Doorways should be at least 0.9 meters wide by 2.2 meters high for switchboard rooms .

Practical Considerations

  • Ensure the distribution box is installed in a dry, accessible area with good ventilation and at an appropriate height (typically around 1.5 meters) for domestic installations .
  • Keep the working space unobstructed, free from furniture, pipes, or other equipment .
  • Plan for multiple escape routes in case of arcing faults or emergencies . By following these clearances, you ensure compliance with safety standards, facilitate maintenance, and reduce the risk of accidents when accessing the distribution box.
