What is a 700-degree fiber optic sensor

A 700-degree fiber optic sensor is a high-temperature sensor that uses optical fibers to measure temperature up to 700°C (1292°F) without electrical interference.

Overview

A fiber optic sensor uses an optical fiber as the sensing element or to transmit signals from a remote sensor to processing electronics. In high-temperature applications, such as 700°C, the sensor typically employs glass fibers rather than plastic fibers, because glass can withstand extreme heat without degrading, whereas plastic fibers are limited to around 350°C (662°F) . These sensors are immune to electromagnetic interference and do not conduct electricity, making them ideal for harsh industrial environments .

How It Works

The sensor measures temperature by detecting changes in the light traveling through the fiber. Techniques include:

  • Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG): The fiber contains periodic variations in refractive index that reflect specific wavelengths of light. Temperature changes shift the reflected wavelength, which is measured to determine the temperature.
  • Raman or Brillouin Scattering: Temperature affects the scattering of light within the fiber, and analyzing these changes allows precise temperature measurement.
  • Evanescent Loss: Some fibers are designed so that light loss varies with temperature, providing a direct measurement . The fiber is often encased in stainless steel or ceramic sheaths to protect it from mechanical damage and maintain performance at high temperatures .

Applications

700-degree fiber optic sensors are used in environments where conventional electronic sensors would fail, including:

  • Industrial furnaces and kilns
  • Gas turbines and engines
  • High-temperature chemical processing
  • Aerospace and power generation systems These sensors provide non-contact, distributed, and highly accurate temperature measurements over long distances, which is critical for monitoring and controlling extreme processes .

Advantages

  • Can operate at temperatures up to 700°C or higher
  • Immune to electromagnetic interference
  • Safe in explosive or high-voltage environments
  • Capable of distributed sensing along the fiber length
  • Non-invasive and durable in harsh conditions In summary, a 700-degree fiber optic sensor is a specialized high-temperature sensor that leverages the properties of optical fibers to provide accurate, reliable, and safe temperature measurements in extreme industrial environments.
