Determine the cable route, pole spans, and locations for splices or access points. Consider soil type, water exposure, and potential rodent activity for outdoor installations .

2. Selecting the Right Cable

Choose a cable type suitable for the environment:

  • Direct-buried cables with water-blocking and armored layers for underground installation.
  • Aerial cables like ADSS or lashed cables for pole-mounted deployment.
  • Submarine cables for underwater crossings with multi-layer armoring .

3. Trenching or Pole Preparation

For underground installation:

  • Excavate a trench at least 60 cm deep (deeper in frozen soil).
  • Lay a 10 cm sand cushion to protect the cable from sharp objects.
  • Clear ducts and pre-install pulling ropes with silicone grease to reduce friction . For aerial installation:

  • Basic verification: Use a Visual Fault Locator (VFL) to detect breaks or macro bends.
  • Quantitative verification: Measure end-to-end optical loss with a stable light source and optical power meter.
  • Advanced testing: Use OTDR traces to locate faults and evaluate splice quality .

7. Documentation

  • Record cable routes, splice locations, and test results following ANSI/TIA/EIA-606 standards.
  • Maintain detailed installation logs for future maintenance and troubleshooting .

8. Maintenance

  • Inspect cables quarterly for sheath damage, sag, or hardware corrosion.
