Principle of Thermal Relay Protection Circuit

A thermal relay protects electrical circuits by using a bimetallic strip that bends when heated by overcurrent, triggering a trip mechanism to disconnect the circuit.

Working Principle

A thermal relay operates on the principle of thermal expansion of metals. It contains a bimetallic strip made of two metals with different coefficients of thermal expansion. When the current flowing through the relay exceeds the rated value, the heating coil generates heat, causing the bimetallic strip to bend due to the unequal expansion of the metals . This bending movement either closes normally open contacts or opens normally closed contacts, which activates the trip circuit and disconnects the load from the power supply .

Construction Components

  • Bimetallic Strip: The core sensing element that bends when heated.
  • Heating Coil: Carries the current and produces heat proportional to the overload.
  • Contacts: Normally open or normally closed contacts that change state to trigger the circuit breaker.
  • Lever-Spring Mechanism: Transfers the bending motion of the bimetallic strip to the contacts to trip the circuit .
  • Current Transformer (optional): In some designs, it supplies current to the heating coil for precise operation .

Operation in a Protection Circuit

  1. Normal Operation: The current is within limits, the bimetallic strip remains straight, and the relay does not trip.
  2. Overcurrent Condition: Excess current heats the bimetallic strip, causing it to bend.
  3. Trip Activation: The bending motion actuates the lever-spring system, changing the state of the contacts.
  4. Circuit Disconnection: The relay energizes the trip coil of the circuit breaker, disconnecting the motor or load to prevent damage .
  5. Resetting: After the fault is cleared, the relay can be manually or automatically reset to resume normal operation .

Key Features

  • Time Delay: The relay allows short-term overloads without tripping, as the heating effect follows Joule's law.
  • Motor Protection: Commonly used in single-phase and three-phase motors to prevent overheating and damage.
  • Cost-Effective and Reliable: Provides simple yet effective protection against sustained overcurrent conditions . In summary, the thermal relay protection circuit relies on the heat-induced bending of a bimetallic strip to sense overcurrent and safely disconnect the circuit, ensuring protection for motors and electrical equipment.
