Function and Operation

Optical modules, also known as optical transceivers, operate at the physical layer of the OSI model and are essential for fiber optic communication systems. Their primary function is optoelectronic conversion: converting electrical signals from network devices into optical signals for transmission over fiber, and converting received optical signals back into electrical signals for processing by the device . A typical optical module consists of:

  • Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA): Converts incoming light signals back into electrical signals using a photodetector .
