Overview of SFP Modules

An SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) module is a compact, hot-pluggable transceiver used in networking equipment such as switches, routers, servers, and media converters . Its primary function is to provide a flexible interface that supports different physical media, including optical fiber and copper cabling . By using SFP modules, network devices can adapt to various transmission standards without replacing the hardware, enhancing deployment flexibility and simplifying maintenance .

Optical Functionality

When used as an optical module, the SFP contains a TOSA (Transmit Optical Subassembly) and ROSA (Receive Optical Subassembly), which handle the conversion of electrical signals into light pulses for fiber optic transmission and convert incoming optical signals back into electrical signals . This allows the SFP slot on a switch or router to function as an optical port, capable of connecting to single-mode or multi-mode fiber networks . Modern SFP modules also support Digital Diagnostics Monitoring (DDM or DOM), enabling real-time monitoring of parameters such as temperature, voltage, and optical power .

Variants and Speeds
