How to wire explosion-proof sockets and distribution boxes

Wiring explosion-proof sockets and distribution boxes requires strict adherence to safety standards, proper grounding, and the use of certified cables suitable for hazardous environments.

Key Steps for Wiring

  1. Power Isolation Before starting, ensure the electrical supply is completely turned off at the main breaker to prevent electrocution or sparks during installation .
  2. Cable Selection Use cables rated for hazardous areas, typically marked with EX or ATEX certification. Cables should be flame-resistant, impact-resistant, and mechanically durable .
  3. Connecting Power Supply
    • For a three-phase system, use three live wires (A, B, C) and one neutral wire (N), with a separate ground wire.
    • Connect the live wires to the main switch input terminals and the neutral wire to the neutral terminal bar. All other switches and sockets are wired from the main switch output .
    • For 220V outlets, use 2.5 mm² single-core copper wires for live and neutral, and a green-yellow 2.5 mm² wire for grounding .
  4. Terminal Connections Open the terminal chamber cover, pass cables through cable glands, and connect them to the appropriate terminals. Ensure internal and external grounding wires are properly connected . Use a multimeter to verify correct connections .
  5. Cable Sealing and Protection
    • Pass inlet and outlet cables through rubber sealing rings and tighten with washers and compression nuts to maintain the explosion-proof integrity .
    • Use explosion-proof flexible conduits for connections to external devices to prevent sparks from escaping .
  6. Component Placement Arrange internal components neatly, label wires clearly, and place devices like frequency converters near the air inlet, away from the outlet, to ensure proper ventilation and maintenance access .
  7. Grounding Metal distribution boxes must be reliably grounded. For three-phase systems, the grounding wire should have a cross-sectional area of at least 4 mm² .
  8. Final Assembly and Inspection Close the terminal cover, secure it with fasteners, and ensure all joints are intact. Do not operate the box with the cover open. Apply anti-rust oil to joint surfaces during maintenance . Regularly inspect for damage and ensure the box is installed in a low-risk, corrosion-resistant area .

Safety Precautions

  • Never open the box while power is on.
  • Maintain installation inclination below 5 degrees.
  • If outdoors, use a rain cover to prevent water ingress.
  • Avoid placing the box near heat sources, collision risks, or high-moisture areas .
  • Follow national electrical standards (IEC, NEC, or local regulations) for hazardous locations . By following these steps and precautions, explosion-proof sockets and distribution boxes can be safely wired and maintained, ensuring reliable operation in hazardous environments.
