Calibrating an OTDR involves cleaning the fiber, setting test parameters, performing autocalibration, and verifying results against known standards to ensure accurate measurements.

Step 1: Prepare the Fiber and OTDR

Before calibration, ensure the fiber under test is clean and free of dust, oil, or grease, using a fiber cleaning kit or lint-free wipes with isopropyl alcohol . Connect the OTDR to the fiber using a launch cable to prevent dead zones at the start of the fiber . Inspect the OTDR connectors and ports regularly to avoid contamination that could affect readings .

Step 2: Power On and Configure the OTDR

Turn on the OTDR and allow it to initialize. Select the fiber type (single-mode or multimode) to match the fiber under test . Configure the test parameters including:

  • Wavelength: Choose the appropriate wavelength for the fiber system.
  • Pulse width: Adjust based on the distance and resolution required. Shorter pulses improve spatial resolution, longer pulses increase dynamic range .
  • Range: Set the fiber length range to cover the entire link.
  • Averaging time: Increase averaging to reduce noise and improve accuracy .

Step 3: Perform Autocalibration

Many OTDRs include an automatic calibration feature. Run the autocalibration to adjust the device's internal settings based on environmental conditions and the connected fiber . This step ensures the OTDR is “tuned” for accurate measurements.

Step 4: Verify Calibration

After calibration, perform a test on a known-good fiber to verify accuracy. Compare the OTDR trace with expected values for loss, reflection, and event locations . If discrepancies appear, adjust pulse width, wavelength, or averaging time and retest. Use multiple acquisitions at different pulse widths to detect closely spaced events and confirm measurement precision .

Step 5: Maintain and Store the OTDR

  • Regular cleaning: Clean connectors and ports to prevent measurement errors .
  • Proper storage: Keep the OTDR in a cool, dry place, ideally in a protective carrying case .
  • Documentation: Record calibration results and test parameters for future reference.

Calibration may also involve external reference standards or optical fiber delay lines for precise measurement verification, following industry standards such as TIA/EIA-455-226 . Understanding OTDR trace interpretation is essential to confirm that calibration is successful and that the device accurately identifies splices, connectors, and faults.
