12 Optical Cable Chromatographic Sequence

The standard 12-core optical fiber color sequence is: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Gray (Slate), White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, and Aqua.

Standard 12-Fiber Sequence

For a 12-core optical fiber cable, each fiber is assigned a unique color to ensure correct identification during splicing, termination, and maintenance. The TIA-598-C and BELLCORE standards define the sequence as follows:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Gray (Slate)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose
  12. Aqua This sequence is applied consistently across single loose tubes or bundles, allowing technicians to quickly identify fibers without confusion .

Multi-Core Cables (More than 12 Fibers)

When a cable contains more than 12 fibers (e.g., 24, 48, 144 cores), the 12-color sequence repeats. To differentiate between groups:

  • Black stripes or dots are added to the fiber coating of the second group of 12 fibers (e.g., Fiber 13 = Blue with black stripe, Fiber 14 = Orange with stripe)
  • Buffer tubes may also follow a color-coded pattern, with each tube containing up to 12 fibers For example, in a 144-core stranded cable, 12 loose tubes are used, each containing 12 fibers, and the 12-color sequence is applied within each tube. The tubes themselves may be color-coded (e.g., red, green, white) to indicate their position in the cable.

Practical Tips

  • Mnemonic for memorization: "Boys Often Give Bad Stuff With Really Bad Yucky Vomit Red Apples"
  • Ribbon fibers: In high-density ribbon cables, 12 fibers are arranged in a row, following the same 12-color sequence.
  • Identification: Always check for stripes, dots, or tube colors when working with cables exceeding 12 fibers to avoid misconnection . This standardized color coding ensures error-free fiber identification, simplifies splicing, and maintains consistency across installations worldwide.
