Optical modules in Cisco soft routers can be configured via CLI for remote insertion/removal, performance monitoring, and integration with Routed Optical Networking management tools.

Supported Optical Modules

Cisco 8000 and 8800 Series routers support ZR and ZR+ modules, QSFP28 100G, and QSFP-DD 400G transceivers, including advanced coherent optics like DP01QS28-E20/E25 and DP04QSDD-ULH-A1 for long-haul applications . These modules provide full visibility of optical performance, including wavelength, TX/RX power, laser bias current, and alarm thresholds .

CLI Configuration

Optical modules can be managed through the router CLI using the Optics Controller submode. Key commands include :

  • breakout – Configure breakout mode (e.g., breakout 4x10)
  • clear – Clear uncommitted configuration
  • commit – Apply configuration changes
  • ext-description – Set a description for the module
  • show – Display module status and performance metrics
  • no – Negate a command or reset to default
  • exit / end – Exit configuration modes Modules can be remotely disabled and re-enabled, simulating online insertion and removal (OIR), which reduces the need for physical intervention and operational costs .

Performance Monitoring

Optical modules provide detailed telemetry, including:

  • TX/RX power and thresholds
