Fiber optic connections can be made using connectors, mechanical splicing, fusion splicing, or advanced physical connection methods, each suited for different applications and performance requirements.

1. Active Connection (Connector-Based)

Active connections use fiber optic connectors to join fibers temporarily, allowing easy plugging and unplugging. This method is flexible, convenient, and widely used in data centers, building networks, and telecom installations. Typical attenuation is around 1 dB per connection, and while connectors may lose 10–20% of light, they enable quick system reconfiguration and maintenance. Common connector types include SC, LC, ST, and MTP/MPO, each designed for specific applications and density requirements .

2. Emergency Connection (Cold Splicing)

Cold splicing, or mechanical splicing, is a temporary method that uses sleeves, adhesives, or gels to align and bond fiber ends. It is quick and reliable for short-term use, with typical attenuation of 0.1–0.3 dB per point. Mechanical splicing can be performed in about 5 minutes by trained personnel, making it suitable for emergency repairs or temporary connections. However, connections may degrade over time and are not ideal for permanent installations .

3. Permanent Fiber Connection (Fusion Splicing)

Fusion splicing is the most durable method, where fiber ends are melted and fused using an electric arc. This method provides the lowest signal loss, typically 0.01–0.03 dB per point, and produces a connection nearly as strong as a single fiber. Fusion splicing is ideal for long-distance, permanent, or high-bandwidth applications. It requires specialized equipment (fusion splicers) and protective enclosures for the splice points .

4. Non-Splicing Physical Connection

Advanced physical connection methods use V-groove alignment and matching liquids to achieve nearly 100% fusion success without traditional splicing. This method is suitable for Fiber to the Room (FTTR) and other high-precision applications, offering permanent connections with minimal light loss .

  • Application Environment: Connectors are ideal for environments requiring frequent reconfiguration, while fusion splicing suits permanent, high-performance networks.
  • Connector Types: SC (push-pull), LC (small form factor), ST (bayonet lock), and MTP/MPO (multi-fiber) are widely used, with selection based on fiber type, density, and equipment compatibility .
